In the United States, an 18-year-old woman named Sumaya Thomas was arrested for dialing 911 to avoid a date with a man she met on a dating app. She informed the dispatcher that her abusive ex-boyfriend, whom she had been involved with for two years, was outside her home and sending threatening text messages. The man had expressed violent intentions, including hitting, kicking, punching, and stabbing her.
Sumaya Thomas, an 18-year-old woman in the United States, faced arrest on June 16 for making false reports. She claimed to be pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child and stated that most of their interactions occurred via Snapchat. The charges against her were misdemeanors.
When the police arrived, they observed the man leaving the woman’s residence. According to his account, he had initiated contact with her a week prior on a dating app. Subsequently, their communication shifted from the app to text messages.
The man provided the officers with evidence of their conversations, which confirmed that the messages were indeed sent to the woman’s phone number.
The man endured more than an hour of detention due to the baseless accusations. It was during a subsequent interview that Ms. Thomas confessed to fabricating the report because she had second thoughts about meeting him and no longer wished to proceed.
“She advised she didn’t think officers would help so she made up this call and the events that she described,” the police complaint stated.
Ms. Thomas faced arrest last week but was subsequently released from the Johnson County Jail in Iowa.
