Luis Rodriguez, 34, heard Two kids “screaming.” “It was total pandemonium,” he said. “It makes you scared to ride the train.”
Upon spotting three teenage boys on the train tracks, a woman promptly dialed 911. She reported hearing in excess of 10 gunshots.
“Two of the kids were arguing and one of them took off,” the woman said. “The other two just stood there. One of the guys was pacing back and forth and the other guy just sat down.
“I was so scared, like, what are these kids doing? They had book bags on. I’m assuming they were kids,” she added.
In a recent advisory, the NYPD issued a statement saying, “An ongoing police investigation is currently underway. We request the public to steer clear of the area between Inwood Ave and Townsend Ave on Jerome Ave in Bronx, NY, which falls under the jurisdiction of @NYPD44Pct. Please consider alternative routes and anticipate traffic congestion in the vicinity.”
According to the latest statistics, New York’s subway system continues to be a safe mode of transportation. On an average weekday, the system accommodates approximately 3.8 million journeys. In the entire year of 2023, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recorded a total of 570 felony assaults, indicating that crime is relatively uncommon.
Incidents involving shootings are particularly rare. In 2022, an event occurred where a man armed with a handgun wounded 10 individuals on a train in Brooklyn. This was the subway system’s first mass shooting incident since 1984.
In a subsequent incident in May 2022, a man tragically ended the life of 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez on a Q train. The police reported this as an unprovoked attack.
Concerns about the subway’s safety escalated among passengers at the onset of the pandemic, coinciding with a surge in the subway crime rate in early 2020. However, these rates returned to their usual levels in 2021. Despite the decrease in crime rates, passengers’ perception of risk remains elevated.
Eric Adams, the Democratic Mayor and ex-city police captain, has been working to alleviate the concerns of anxious commuters by augmenting the police presence in subway stations.
