The 50-year-old, who serves as the senior vice president of PML-N, secured victory in the chief ministerial elections despite a walkout by lawmakers from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). Maryam Nawaz defeated Rana Aftab of the PTI-backed SIC to claim this significant position in the politically crucial Punjab province, which is home to 120 million people
The session, which commenced with a 30-minute delay, was chaired by the recently elected Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan.
Maryam Nawaz, who had previously vowed to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people, has made history as the first female Chief Minister in Pakistan. Her victory came after garnering support from 220 Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) during the elections.
