Kamala Harris, the United States Vice President, forcefully called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. She also pressed Israel to increase the flow of aid to alleviate what she described as “inhumane” conditions and a “humanitarian catastrophe” among the Palestinian people.
“People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane and our common humanity compels us to act,” Harris reportedly said. “The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses.”
Harris made the remarks while speaking at an event in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday.’
According to an Israeli newspaper, Israel decided to boycott the Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo on Sunday. The reason behind this decision was Hamas’s refusal to provide the names of hostages who are still alive. This development adds tension to the ongoing conflict in the region.
“Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal,” Harris said. “Let’s get a ceasefire. Let’s reunite the hostages with their families. And let’s provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza.”
On February 26, President Joe Biden expressed his hope for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. During an appearance at an ice cream shop in New York City, alongside comedian Seth Meyers, Biden stated, “Well, I hope by the beginning of the weekend, I mean, the end of the weekend.” His statement reflects the urgency and desire for peace in the region, as leaders work towards finding a resolution to the conflict.
“My national security adviser tells me that we’re close. We’re close, it’s not done yet. And my hope is that by next Monday we’ll have a ceasefire,” President Biden added.
Hamas has recently revised its stance in the hostage negotiations and the temporary cessation of hostilities in Gaza. This shift occurred after Israel criticized Hamas’s position as “delusional”. According to CNN, the major obstacles have now been addressed.
Specifically, Hamas has abandoned its insistence on a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and an end to the war. Additionally, their requirements for the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released have decreased.
