The upcoming vote, scheduled for October 2025, looms large, and recent public opinion surveys indicate that the Liberal Party would face a significant challenge from the right-of-center Conservatives. Pollsters suggest that voters are growing weary of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who assumed office in November 2015.
“I could not be the man I am and abandon the fight at this point,” he shared candidly during an extensive interview with French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada.
When questioned about contemplating quitting, he chuckled and responded, “Every day, the thought of quitting crosses my mind. This job I’m immersed in demands personal sacrifices, and it’s nothing short of madness.”
“Of course, it’s super tough, it’s super not great at times. But my God, the path we’re on is so precarious, democracies are under such attack around the world.” Trudeau added.
The Conservatives have pledged to eliminate the carbon tax implemented by the Liberals, tackle the government’s budget deficit, address the housing crisis, and take a firm stance against crime . The impending increase in the carbon tax on April 1 remains a contentious issue, with Prime Minister Trudeau maintaining that the government will not yield to calls from certain provincial premiers to freeze the hike.
“I entered politics not to be popular, not for personal reasons, (but) because I want to serve and I know I have something to offer,” he said.
In the past year, Trudeau and his wife, Sophie, publicly disclosed their separation after a marriage spanning 18 years.
