Jaspal Singh, a 57-year-old Indian national who was arrested for re-entering the United States illegally, has tragically passed away at a hospital in Atlanta, on Wednesday as reported by authorities.
The Indian Consulate in New York has been informed of the passing of Jaspal Singh. Additionally, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has notified his next of kin about this unfortunate event.
Singh passed away at a hospital in Atlanta on April 15. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stated that an autopsy is currently pending to determine the official cause of his death.
Jaspal Singh, legally entered the United States on October 25, 1992. However, on January 21, 1998, an immigration judge issued an order for his removal from the US. At some point afterward, Singh voluntarily returned to India.
On June 29, 2023, Jaspal Singh was apprehended by US Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol officers while attempting to re-enter the United States illegally at the US-Mexico border.
On June 29, 2023, was transferred into the custody of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta. While awaiting deportation, he tragically passed away at a hospital in Atlanta on April 15.
When a non-citizen passes away while in detention at a center, the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) is required to promptly notify Congress, relevant non-governmental organizations, and the media.
Additionally, they must post a news release on their public website within two business days, providing relevant details about the incident.
