Third user has described the green sky during the Dubai storm as reminiscent of the colors associated with supercells and tornadoes. They mentioned having witnessed similar phenomena in the deserts of southwestern United States.
According to a Fox News report, the change in hue during the Dubai storm is attributed to the diffusion of light by ice droplets in the atmosphere.
Quoting National Weather Service authorities, the report explains that water and ice particles in storm clouds, especially those with significant depth and water content, primarily scatter blue light.
When the reddish light scattered by the atmosphere illuminates these blue water and ice droplets within the cloud, they appear to emit a green glow.
The report stated that there is “no known correlation between a blue-green sky and tornado production.”
Here’s a revised version of the quote from Scott Bachmeier, the research meteorologist at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies:
“When blue objects are illuminated with red light,” Bachmeier explains, “they appear green. Green is significant, but not proof that a tornado is on the way.
A green cloud will only occur if the cloud is very deep, which generally only happens in thunderstorm clouds. Those are the kind of storms that may produce hail and tornadoes.”
Given the current weather conditions, Dubai International (DXB) has issued an advisory for passengers not to come to the airport. Additionally, flights are experiencing delays and diversions.
