The body of a 31-year-old Thai model, who disappeared in Bahrain a year ago, has been discovered in a morgue. Her family is now calling for an investigation into her death according to a report by the UK newspaper Daily Mirror.
After her modeling work slowed down, Kaikan Kaennakam moved to Bahrain, where she took a job at a restaurant to provide for her family in northeastern Thailand.
Through social media updates, the woman informed her family that she had met and was residing with her Bahraini boyfriend.
In April 2023, Kaikan ceased posting on her social media accounts, which raised concerns for her family. They were unable to contact the model by phone, as reported by the Daily Mirror.
In January, Kaikan’s family reached out to the Thai embassy in Bahrain for assistance in locating her. Despite some support from the Thai community in the Gulf country, she remained untraceable.
On April 18th, the Thai embassy in Bahrain notified the family that the remains of an unidentified Southeast Asian woman had been stored in the morgue at the Salmaniya medical complex in Manama since the previous year.
The woman, known as Kaikan, was identified by a tattoo on her leg, and her cause of death was officially recorded as ‘acute lung and heart failure due to alcohol poisoning,’ according to the Daily Mirror.
On April 19, In an online post Kaikan’s sister wrote, “My sister started working in Bahrain around two or three years ago and found an Arab boyfriend there.” She added, “However, we have not been able to contact her since April last year. Our family contacted the Thai Embassy in Bahrain and learned on April 18 this month that she had passed away.”
Despite the embassy’s assertion that Kaikan’s cause of death was alcohol poisoning, her family reported finding bruises on her body.
Suthida Ngernthaworn further added.”The embassy in Bahrain documented the cause of death as alcohol intoxication, but her body photos contained bruises. We could not bring her body back because repatriation is expensive. My mum also wants the case to be reopened, and for an autopsy to be conducted again,”
