LOS ANGELES — Carl Weathers, the iconic actor celebrated for his unforgettable roles as Apollo Creed in the ‘Rocky’ series and in the ‘Star Wars’ series ‘The Mandalorian’, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76, leaving a legacy that spans film, television, arts, and sports.
Weathers was best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies. His big-screen break came in 1976 when he landed this role, which he reprised in three other “Rocky” movies. His portrayal of Apollo Creed left an indelible mark on the film industry and is recognized worldwide.
In addition to his work in the “Rocky” series, Weathers also played significant roles in other films and television series. He starred in the 1987 film “Predator” alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and appeared in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” in 1996. More recently, he was known for his role in the hit “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian.”
Weathers’ versatility as an actor was evident in his diverse roles. He lent his voice to Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and other shorts in the beloved Disney-Pixar franchise. He also earned comedy cred by playing a bizarro version of himself in the cult sitcom “Arrested Development.” His other TV acting credits include “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Magnum P.I.” and “Chicago P.D.”
Before his acting career took off, Weathers was a successful football player. He played collegiately at San Diego State University and then professionally for the Oakland Raiders. He retired from the sport in 1974 to seriously pursue acting.
In 2021, Weathers was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor for his re-occurring role as Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian.” This nomination was a testament to his enduring talent and contribution to the television industry.
Tributes have been pouring in from Weathers’ colleagues, including Hollywood titans. Adam Sandler, his “Happy Gilmore” co-star, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, calling Weathers a “true legend.” He wrote,
“A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete. So much fun to be around always. Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell. Loved his sons more than anything. What a guy!! Everyone loved him. My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him. Love to his entire family and Carl will always be known as a true legend.”
Similarly, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who starred alongside Weathers in “Predator”, also lauded Weathers: “Carl Weathers will always be a legend. An extraordinary athlete, a fantastic actor, and a great person. We couldn’t have made Predator without him. And we certainly wouldn’t have had such a wonderful time making it,” Schwarzenegger said.

Weathers’ passing is a significant loss to the film and television industry. His contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports have left an indelible mark. He will be remembered as a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend. His legacy will continue to be celebrated worldwide and across generations. His life was indeed extraordinary, and he will be deeply missed.
