At least 25 people lost their lives, and over a dozen were injured after a bus careened into a ravine from a mountain road in northern Peru. This tragic incident occurred on Monday, according to local authorities.
According to local official Olga Bobadilla, the tragic incident occurred late Sunday on a potholed dirt road in the Andean region of Cajamarca. The bus plunged into an abyss approximately 200 meters (about 650 feet) deep.
According to municipal official Jaime Herrera, a bus carrying over 50 passengers veered off the road and ended up on the river’s edge. Some of the passengers on board were swept away by the water.
Emergency responders, including rescue workers and firefighters, were present at the crash site. They evacuated the injured to the hospital.
Peruvian roads experience frequent accidents due to factors such as speeding, inadequate road conditions, insufficient signage, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations. In the past year, the country recorded over 3,100 fatalities resulting from traffic accidents.
Authorities are currently examining whether the bus was in proper working condition before the accident occurred.
