Upon receiving reports of an active shooter, law enforcement promptly arrived at the location. Gunfire was still ongoing upon their arrival, and tragically, four individuals were discovered deceased, with several others sustaining injuries.
After escaping the scene in a vehicle, Garvey led police on a chase. Ultimately, he turned the gun on himself, causing his car to crash into a ditch near Hicks Pike on Dale Heimbrock Way. Law enforcement discovered him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and transported him to a hospital, where he was declared deceased.
“Delaney Eary (19), Hayden Rybicki (20), Melissa Parrett (44), and Shane Miller (20) were the four individuals who tragically lost their lives. The gathering was held at Parrett’s residence in honor of her 21-year-old child. Although Garvey was acquainted with the celebrants, they had not received an invitation to the party. The motive behind the crime remains uncertain.”
According to Mallery, this marks the first instance of a mass shooting in Florence, and the emotional impact is significant as it’s an unprecedented event.
“We train on this, hoping it would never happen, but unfortunately, we’ve been touched like so many departments and cities,” he added.
After being transported to a nearby hospital, the three injured victims are currently in critical but stable condition, with a full recovery anticipated.
