According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple and Google are currently engaged in active negotiations. The aim is to allow Apple to license Google’s Gemini, a collection of generative AI models, for integration into upcoming features within the iPhone’s software this year.
However, specific details such as the terms, branding, and implementation of this AI agreement have not been finalized yet.
Apple is actively developing new capabilities for its upcoming iPhone iOS 18 using its own in-house AI models. However, in order to enhance generative AI features—such as creating images and writing essays based on simple prompts—Apple is seeking a strategic partner.
The report suggests that any official announcement regarding the Apple-Google AI deal is likely to occur during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
Additionally, Apple’s discussions with OpenAI indicate a broader exploration of AI models. While the specifics remain undisclosed, considering OpenAI’s expertise in cutting-edge AI research, their involvement could lead to exciting advancements in iPhone capabilities.
