A tragic incident occurred on an Indonesian volcano known for its mesmerizing “blue fire” phenomenon. A 31-year-old Chinese woman, Huang Lihong, lost her life after falling off the crater’s edge while posing for a photo.
She was with her husband on a guided tour, attempting to watch the sunrise when the accident happened. The volcano, Ijen, is a popular tourism spot in the region.
The authorities reported that the woman fell 75 meters and tragically lost her life due to the impact of the fall. The incident has been classified as an accident, as reported by The Post.
According to the tour guide’s account, Ms. Lihong had heeded the repeated warnings about the dangers of getting too close to the crater’s edge while taking photos.
Despite this, she eventually stepped backward, trying to get closer, and accidentally tripped over her long clothing. Tragically, she fell into the volcano’s mouth. The specific type of clothing she was wearing—a skirt or a dress—remains unclear.
Rescuers spent approximately two hours recovering Ms. Lihong’s body, as reported by the authorities.
The Ijen volcano is famous for its mesmerizing ‘blue fire,’ which results from the combustion of sulfuric gases emitting a blue light.
In 2018, numerous residents had to evacuate their homes, and around 30 people were hospitalized due to toxic gas emissions from the volcano. Despite these occasional releases of noxious gases, Mount Ijen remains accessible to the public.
Indonesia, with approximately 130 active volcanoes, recently witnessed the eruption of Mount Ruang in its outermost region of North Sulawesi. The volcano spewed a tower of ash into the sky, prompting the evacuation of thousands as molten rocks descended upon villages.
The fiery orange lava, towering ash column, and volcanic lightning created a spectacular scene. According to the country’s volcanology agency, the eruption sent a plume of smoke soaring 400 meters (1,312 feet) above the peak.
