During prayer time on Monday night, gunmen targeted a mosque in western Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, according to a statement from the provincial governor’s spokesperson.
During the attack, a woman and a child lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries, as reported by Mawlawi Nesar Ahmad Alyes, the spokesperson for the governor of Herat province.
Although the identity of the attackers remains unclear, the Taliban claims to be prioritizing security restoration after the withdrawal of foreign forces in 2021.
However, attacks on mosques, religious seminaries, and government buildings persist despite the end of the 20-year war. Many of these attacks have been attributed to the militant Islamic State group.
The western Herat province, situated near the Iran border, is primarily inhabited by the Shi’ite religious minority.
Unfortunately, this community has faced some of the most brutal attacks against civilians in Afghanistan’s tumultuous past.
