On Tuesday, May 28, a pedestrian lost her life in a hit-and-run incident at a Bronx intersection. A speeding vehicle, which had been clipped by another car, struck her before fleeing the scene. The entire incident was captured on camera.
At 6 p.m., the chilling video captures the moment when a 30-year-old woman was crossing Washington Avenue at East 167th Street. Startled, she noticed a blue Jeep SUV rapidly approaching her.
The woman came to a halt in the middle of the crosswalk, instinctively taking a step backward. A black Toyota Rav4 grazed the Jeep, yet she struggled to retreat to safety on the nearby sidewalk.
The impact from the Rav4 striking the Jeep’s rear bumper caused the vehicle to spin out of control. The Jeep veered directly toward the pedestrian.
The Jeep struck the woman with such force that she was thrown into a parked car. Subsequently, the driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene, according to the NYPD.
Three individuals emerged from the damaged Jeep. The driver gestured toward the location where the woman had been struck, then calmly retrieved several items from the vehicle and departed. Meanwhile, the Rav4 driver stayed at the scene.
Police reported that the woman, who remains unidentified, was transported to Lincoln Hospital but was pronounced dead there. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether any of the vehicles ran a red light, remain unclear. Additionally, it is uncertain which vehicle had the right of way.
Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, but as of now, no charges have been filed.
Earlier this month, authorities apprehended a Bronx driver who had evaded justice for a year after leaving e-bicyclist Hua Pan, aged 64, to perish on the street in a separate hit-and-run incident.
Emilio Berrios, 32 years old, now faces charges of criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and fleeing the scene following the fatal hit-and-run that claimed Pan’s life on April 5 of last year.
