A 63-year-old man in Florida experienced a rare medical event when his colon protruded from his body after a forceful sneeze during breakfast at a diner. Surgeons successfully placed the colon back into his abdomen, as reported by New York Post.
Before the shocking incident, the man had previously dealt with prostate cancer and had undergone abdominal surgery. On the day his bowel ‘eviscerated,’ he had recently removed sutures from his abdomen.
According to a recent report in the American Journal of Medical Case Reports, the man experienced an unusual incident during breakfast.
After a forceful sneeze followed by coughing, he felt a wet sensation and pain in his lower abdomen. To his surprise, he saw several loops of pink bowel protruding from his recent surgical incision.
After his intestines became exposed, the man used his shirt to cover them while his wife called for an ambulance.
When the paramedics arrived, they observed a roughly 3-inch vertical laceration with a significant amount of bowel protruding through it. Thankfully, the man hadn’t lost much blood, and he was promptly transported to a nearby hospital.
Upon arriving at the Emergency Department, the Urology service was promptly consulted. The patient’s vital signs were normal.
Pre-operative blood tests showed no significant changes compared to recent results. The patient agreed to undergo an exploratory laparotomy after a nasogastric tube was inserted.
Three surgeons carefully returned the eviscerated bowel to the abdominal cavity and thoroughly examined the entire length of the small bowel, finding no signs of injury.
In order to prevent the abdomen from reopening, the three urological surgeons used figure-of-eight stitches—a robust type of closure.
After a six-day hospital stay, the 63-year-old patient was discharged and resumed a normal diet.
