As gang violence in Haiti escalated, the United States took action by airlifting non-essential embassy staff from the country. In response to the deteriorating security situation, American personnel have increased security measures at their mission in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
In the wake of recent violent incidents, including attacks on airports, police stations, and prisons, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has faced mounting pressure to step down. The situation escalated to the point where a coalition of gangs warned of civil war if he did not resign.
As a result, Prime Minister Henry, who had been leading the country on an interim basis since July 2021 following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse, has now tendered his resignation. His departure comes after an emergency summit held in Jamaica to address the deteriorating law and order situation in Haiti.
The US Embassy in Haiti recently took decisive action due to the escalating gang violence. In response to the dangerous situation near US embassy compounds and the airport, the State Department arranged for the departure of additional embassy personnel.
The embassy emphasized that these passengers work for the US government. Despite these security concerns, the embassy will remain open.
