On Monday a 40-year-old man of Indian-origin, M Krishnan received a 20-year prison sentence for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
His victim, Mallika Begum Rahamansa Abdul Rahman, also 40, died on January 17, 2019, due to injuries sustained from Krishnan’s assault. Last week, Krishnan confessed to his guilt in Singapore’s high court, as reported by the “TODAY” newspaper on Monday.
Justice Valerie Thean observed that despite Krishnan’s promise to reform in 2018 during his mitigation for another offense of abusing police officers, he persisted in mistreating both his wife and girlfriend.
She recognized that Krishnan’s intermittent explosive disorder played a role in his violent behavior, but alcohol also had an impact.
Despite being diagnosed with the disorder after the offense, Krishnan was aware of his tendency to display temper in socially unacceptable ways based on his previous encounters with the law.
In 2015, Krishnan initiated an extramarital relationship with Mallika, who had two daughters from her previous marriages, as reported by Singapore Law Watch.
As a result, she decided to seek a personal police protection order. Remarkably, despite these events, she remains married to Krishnan, as reported by Singapore Law Watch.”>
In November of that year, Krishnan’s wife came home to find him and Mallika drinking alcohol in the master bedroom. Disturbed by the situation, she expressed her anger towards Krishnan.
In response, he physically assaulted her and even reached for a whisky bottle, causing her to fear for her safety. As a result, she decided to seek a personal police protection order.
Remarkably, despite these events, she remains married to Krishnan, as reported by Singapore Law Watch.
Krishnan and Mallika remained together until her passing. Legal documents indicate that Krishnan struck Mallika once, albeit over a minor issue, in 2017.”>
In early 2019, the situation escalated when Mallika disclosed her involvement with multiple men, even during Krishnan’s incarceration in 2018.
On January 15th of that year, Krishnan physically assaulted Mallika after she confessed to infidelity while they were drinking together in their shared apartment. The following day, Mallika sought medical attention at a hospital and was discovered to have several bruises and abrasions.
On the evening of January 16, 2019, Krishnan, fueled by anger and frustration over Mallika’s multiple affairs, once again attacked her. He struck her face, seized her by the hair, and delivered punches and kicks.
Upon realizing that she was unresponsive and not breathing, he contacted the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Unfortunately, Mallika was declared deceased by the responders. An autopsy revealed that she had succumbed to a head injury, accompanied by numerous bruises and fractured ribs.
During the sentencing phase, Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh advocated for a prison term of 15 to 18 years, emphasizing the need for the court to “send a strong message that violence of this kind is not acceptable.”
Krishnan’s defense attorney countered by highlighting his client’s early guilty plea, cooperation with law enforcement, and efforts to manage alcohol consumption. Additionally, the lawyer pointed out that Mallika’s involvement with other men had influenced Krishnan’s decision-making.
