In iOS 17.5, Apple has introduced a convenient “Repair State” mode that enables users to send their iPhones for repair without needing to disable Find My and Activation Lock. This feature simplifies the repair process while ensuring security.
Previously, when users sent their iPhones to Apple for repair, they had to disable the Find My feature, which also turned off Activation Lock. Activation Lock is a security measure that prevents unauthorized use of a lost or stolen device.
While this step was necessary for repairs, it also meant that the iPhone’s trackability was lost, leaving it vulnerable to theft without any recovery options.
According to reports, the recently introduced “Repair State” feature in iOS 17.5 allows users to enable a “Ready for Repair” mode on their iPhones while still keeping Find My active.
In this mode, the device remains trackable and secure with Activation Lock enabled throughout the repair process. Additionally, users have the option to mark the device as lost if necessary while it undergoes repairs.
According to the report, when an iPhone is in the “Repair State” in the Find My app, it is marked with a small stethoscope icon, signifying that it is ready for repair. This option is accessible only when the iPhone is online and trackable; for offline devices, the standard removal text is displayed.
It’s important to note that this feature seems to be restricted to iPhones at the moment. If users attempt to use it with other Apple devices such as Macs or Apple Watches, they receive a warning that the device will be removed from their Apple ID account.
When an iPhone is in the “Repair State,” it maintains full functionality. However, it’s important to note that once activated, this feature cannot be disabled. Users should take this into consideration.
The “Repair State” feature is currently in development, and a wider release is anticipated in May, coinciding with the launch of iOS 17.5 and related updates.
Apple’s latest ‘repair state’ feature aims to simplify the process of sending iPhones in for repair, making it more convenient and secure for users.
