Apple has recently unveiled an exciting enhancement to its repair procedures. Commencing this September-October, certain iPhone models will now be eligible for repair using used, genuine Apple parts while maintaining their full functionality.
Apple has recently introduced an innovative repair process for certain iPhone models starting this fall. This enhanced procedure aims to achieve several important goals like privacy, security, and safety, while offering consumers more options, increasing product longevity, and minimising the environmental impact of a repair,” Apple said via a post in its newsroom.

Previously, during iPhone repairs, users had to undergo a process known as parts pairing. This involved matching the series number of their device with the new Apple part being installed.
However, if a user opted for an aftermarket or used component, Apple would send notifications indicating that the company couldn’t verify the newly installed part. This challenge was especially prevalent with Face ID and Touch ID sensors, which might not function correctly with non-Apple components.
Apple has taken a significant step by eliminating these notifications for used parts. This change will streamline the repair process, benefiting both users and repair shops. Now, there’s no need to provide the serial number of the drive before ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store.
“In order to simplify the repair process, customers and service providers will no longer need to provide a device’s serial number when ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store for repairs not involving replacement of the logic board,” Apple said.
Apple’s recent announcement indicates that the company will initially implement these changes for components like displays, batteries, and cameras. Additionally, they have committed to providing support for used biometric sensors, including Face ID and Touch ID.
Apple has recently revealed plans to extend its Activation Lock Feature to iPhone parts. As of now, this security feature prevents unauthorized use of lost or stolen iPhones. By extending it to individual components, Apple aims to enhance security and discourage theft of iPhone parts.
“If a device under repair detects that a supported part was obtained from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted,” Apple said.
Apple’s Parts and Service history feature, accessible within iOS Settings, provides users with valuable information.
It not only indicates whether a device has undergone repairs but also offers details about the specific parts used. Going forward, this feature will be extended to differentiate between new and used genuine Apple parts.
“This fall, Apple will expand Parts and Service History to additionally show whether a part is a new or used genuine Apple part,” Apple said.
