According to Samoan Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, an altercation occurred between the two women before the situation escalated into violence. The exact cause of the argument remains unclear.
Interestingly, the pair were not only colleagues but also friends, with Gabbard serving as Figiel’s mentor, as reported by local news media outlets.
Sinaviana-Gabbard was not only the aunt of Tulsi Gabbard but also the sister of Hawaii state senator Mike Gabbard.
Her family attests that she held the distinction of being the first Samoan to attain full professorship in the United States.
She was widely recognized as a writer, educator, and environmental advocate. Mike Gabbard, her brother, fondly recalls their close bond during childhood and takes immense pride in her accomplishments.
“Caroline was my best friend as a teenager,” Mike Gabbard said.
During my rebellious teenage years, she provided significant support. Her passion for reading influenced me greatly, leading me to major in English at Sonoma State University in California.
Eventually, I returned to our hometown in American Samoa, where I taught English in high schools and held various roles, including faculty member, guidance counselor, and dean at the community college.
I hold a deep affection for her and extend my heartfelt wishes as she embarks on her ongoing journey.
