Sam Altman, the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, expressed a sentiment along the lines of: “Regardless of whether we spend $500 million, $5 billion, or $50 billion annually, my primary concern lies in ensuring that we continue on a path where the value we create for society far outweighs these costs.
As long as we can find a sustainable way to cover our expenses, I’m not overly concerned about the specific dollar amount.
He further emphasized that the development of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) would indeed be costly but ultimately worthwhile.
In response to inquiries about ChatGPT, Altman expressed embarrassment, stating, “GPT-4 represents the least intelligent model any of you will encounter.”
He emphasized the significance of frequent and early releases, aligning with the company’s iterative deployment approach.
Altman cautioned against developing AGI in isolation, comparing it to constructing it in a basement. He emphasized that such an approach would leave the world unaware and unprepared, ultimately hindering OpenAI’s ability to be a good neighbor in the global community. The inevitability of AGI development remains a central focus for the organization.
According to him, GPT-5 will significantly surpass GPT-4 in intelligence, and GPT-6 will outperform GPT-5. He emphasized that we haven’t reached the peak of this development curve yet, and continuous improvement is inevitable.”
Sam Altman has faced considerable scrutiny regarding the substantial funds allocated to AGI development, surpassing the GDP of certain countries. Some argue that once AGI is achieved, money will lose its conventional value.
Others view this investment as a small cost for a transformative impact on humanity. Recently, Altman sought investors willing to contribute $5–$7 trillion to revolutionize the chip and AI industry.
