The father of the 40-year-old assailant, who mercilessly stabbed six individuals to death at a Sydney mall, including a nine-month-old infant, has heartbreakingly described his son as “loving a monster.”
Andrew Cauchi, the father of Joel Cauchi, expressed profound heartbreak over the attack carried out by his son. He grapples with the incomprehensible nature of the tragedy, unable to fathom what drove Joel to commit such heinous acts. In his anguished words to news agency AFP, Andrew Cauchi lamented, “This is so horrendous, I can’t even explain it. I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do or say to bring back the dead.
Joel Cauchi, the assailant responsible for the brutal stabbing spree at Westfield Bondi Junction, had a long-standing history of mental health issues. His rampage left six people dead and several others injured. The chilling CCTV footage from inside the mall captures him wearing an Australian rugby league jersey, pursuing victims as they lay helpless on the floor.
His father, Andrew Cauchi, exhausted every effort to assist Joel when he received the diagnosis, even positioning himself as a selfless servant to his son. In Andrew’s heart-wrenching words, “He is my son, and I am loving a monster. To you, he is a monster, but to me, he was a very sick boy.”
As Sydney police delve into the motives behind Joel Cauchi’s attack, which predominantly targeted women while seemingly avoiding men during his rampage on Saturday, his father has stepped forward with an explanation.
“He desired companionship, but his social skills were lacking, leading to frustration,” he explained.
The terrifying ordeal reached its conclusion when Inspector Amy Scott fatally shot the assailant. This courageous female officer, now celebrated as a hero, was observed sprinting through the mall in relentless pursuit of the attacker.
Five women and one man, including the mall security guard, tragically lost their lives. Among the victims was a new mother who, in a desperate act of courage, entrusted her wounded infant to strangers before succumbing to her injuries.
The nine-month-old baby remains in critical condition. Authorities have ruled out terrorism as the motive behind the attack.
