The Georgia Appeals Court has agreed to consider an appeal from former President Donald Trump, who is seeking the disqualification of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from his 2020 election interference case. This development has added a new dimension to this high-profile legal battle.
Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead Georgia attorney, said in a statement, “This is highly significant. It means the defense is permitted to apply to the Georgia Court of Appeals for pretrial review of the Judge’s order refusing to dismiss the case or disqualify Fulton County DA Willis.”
Trump and his co-defendants have accused Willis of misconduct, alleging that she financially benefited from her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. They argue that this relationship presents a conflict of interest that should disqualify Willis from prosecuting the case.
The allegations stem from a romantic relationship between Willis and Wade. Both parties have confirmed the relationship but have vehemently denied any wrongdoing. They maintain that their personal relationship has not influenced the proceedings of the case in any way.
However, the presiding judge, Scott McAfee, ruled in mid-March that the “appearance of impropriety” created by their personal relationship should result in either Willis or Wade leaving the case. In response to this ruling, Willis’ office confirmed that Wade had resigned and she had accepted his resignation.
In another statement, Sadow expressed his anticipation for the appeal, saying, “President Trump looks forward to presenting interlocutory arguments to the Georgia Court of Appeals as to why the case should be dismissed and Fulton County DA Willis should be disqualified for her misconduct in this unjustified, unwarranted political persecution.”
Despite this, Trump and his co-defendants continued to push for Willis’ disqualification. Their persistence led to the recent decision by the Georgia Appeals Court to consider their appeal. This decision marks a significant milestone in the case and could potentially alter its course.
The timing of this development is particularly noteworthy as Trump continues to sit for trial in a separate criminal case in New York. The outcome of the appeal in Georgia could have far-reaching implications for Trump’s legal battles.
During the hearings, Fani Willis denied that her relationship with Nathan Wade began before she appointed Wade to the Trump case. She recalled Nathan Wade’s reason for ending their relationship, saying, “The only thing a woman can do for him is make him a sandwich.”
The latest update on this case is that the Georgia State Court of Appeals has decided to consider an appeal from former President Donald Trump challenging the decision not to disqualify Fani Willis as the district attorney overseeing the 2016 election interference charges against him.
This decision by the appeals court has put the Fulton County election case deeper into limbo.
