UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak found himself in the crosshairs of social media and fashion enthusiasts alike after he sported a pair of Adidas Samba trainers during a recent interview at 10 Downing Street. Critics were quick to express their disapproval, claiming that Sunak’s choice had “ruined it for everyone”
In the interview where he discussed his government’s tax policies, the 43-year-old UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak opted for a pair of grey, white, and black Adidas Samba sneakers—a well-known German sportswear brand. These casual kicks were complemented by a white shirt, navy chinos, and black socks.
Adidas hails the Sambas as a “legendary shoe with a storied past,” and they have the added cachet of being regarded as fashionable. However, some footwear enthusiasts argue that Sunak’s attempt to appear trendy may have diminished their trendiness.
During his appearance on LBC Radio, Rishi Sunak expressed his sentiments, stating, “I extend a fullsome apology to the Samba community. However, in my defense, I must emphasize that I have been donning Adidas trainers, including the iconic Sambas, for numerous years”
He received his inaugural pair of Adidas sneakers as a Christmas gift from his brother, and from that moment onward, he never wavered. In his own words, he has been a loyal devotee for many years.
Sunak said he purchased the pair of Adidas sneakers seen in the video. “That pair (in the video) I did buy, but I’ve had Adidas trainers for a very long time,” he added.
The UK leader, who also received criticism regarding the short length of his trousers, expressed his amusement at the intense scrutiny directed toward his fashion choices.
British GQ magazine asserted that Rishi Sunak’s attempt to appear “young and hip” had the unintended consequence of diminishing the cool factor of the eternally stylish sneaker. The once-iconic Samba now bears the weight of controversy, thanks to the UK leader’s fashion choices.
According to footwear historian Elizabeth Semmelhack, Rishi Sunak’s choice of wearing Adidas Samba sneakers might just be the “death knell” for this retro trainer.
