Following the incident, a representative from the Hays Police Department arrived at the crime scene. After conversing with Mr. Trickle, Sergeant Brandon Hauptman harbored suspicions regarding the husband’s potential role in the tragic event.
Despite the initial suspicions, Dr. Lyle Noordhoek, the coroner, determined three days after Ms. Kristen’s death that it was a suicide. Although Mr. Trickle, who served in the Army Reserve, was released, the investigating officers continued their work on the case.
Subsequent to several years, it has come to light that Mr. Trickle redeemed two life insurance policies for his wife, amounting to more than $120,000.
He used almost $2,000 of the insurance payout to purchase a life-size sex doll just forty-eight hours after receiving it.
Detective Joshua “JB” Burkholder expressed concern about Colby Trickle’s actions following his wife’s death. He emphasized the importance of allowing a mourning process after losing a loved one, and found it troubling that Colby purchased a sex doll so soon after his wife’s passing.
Kristen Trickle’s aunt, Delynn Rice, expressed shock and disapproval at Colby’s decision to spend Kristen’s life insurance funds on a sex doll. She likened it to him purchasing a substitute for Kristen using her own money.
Aaron Cunnigham, Assistant Ellis County Attorney, disclosed that Mr. Trickle utilized the entire $120,000 insurance payout within approximately eight months.
In addition to acquiring the life-size sex doll, Mr. Trickle invested substantial sums in video games, debt repayment, and music equipment, aspiring to pursue a career as a performer.
During his trial in September 2023, prosecutors highlighted his purchase of the sex doll. His mother, Tina Kreutzer, testified as a defense witness, claiming that the doll provided warmth and comfort to Mr. Trickle, who was suffering from nightmares and sleep troubles following his wife’s death.
After a period of over four years since Kristen Trickle’s death, a jury rendered a verdict of guilt against Mr. Trickle for murder in November 2023. Consequently, he received a life sentence in prison without the chance of parole for 50 years, as reported by CBS News.
