US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel informed, on Wednesday the United States offered support for reforms to the United Nations institutions, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
In relation to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s comment about India’s absence of a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Vedant Patel remarked, “The President has previously addressed this matter during his speeches at the UN General Assembly, and the Secretary has also made indirect references to it.”
The topic of UN reforms, including the composition of the UNSC, remains a subject of global discourse, with various nations advocating for changes to better reflect the current geopolitical landscape. India’s aspiration for a permanent seat on the UNSC continues to be a significant part of this ongoing dialogue.
“We certainly support reforms to the UN institution, including the Security Council, to make it reflective of the 21st-century world that we live in. I don’t have any specifics to offer on what those steps are, but certainly, we recognise that there is a need for reform, but I will leave it at that for now,” he added.
In January this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his view that India’s lack of a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is “absurd.” He pointed out that powerful nations are often reluctant to relinquish their influence.
“At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. The problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat IMO,” the Tesla CEO wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
India has persistently sought a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to more effectively advocate for the interests of the developing world. Notably, its demand has gained momentum following support from the international community.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) consists of 15 member states, including five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members who are elected for two-year terms. The five permanent members hold the authority to veto any vote within the council.
