WhatsApp is introducing new features for its messaging app, including the ability to share files over a local network without requiring an internet connection. Additionally, the platform is testing a feature that allows users to attach personalized notes to individual contacts.
WhatsApp’s local file-sharing feature, showcased in screenshots from the Android beta version 2.24.9.22 (courtesy of WABetaInfo), allows users to share files like photos and documents with nearby WhatsApp contacts using a local network.
This functionality operates independently of cellular data or an internet connection. To activate this feature, users need to opt in to be discoverable by nearby users. However, they retain the ability to revoke this permission whenever they choose, ensuring control over their visibility.
WhatsApp ensures that file sharing using this method will be end-to-end encrypted, preserving the same high level of security associated with WhatsApp messages.
WhatsApp is currently working on a feature that allows users to add personal notes to their contacts. Screenshots from the Android beta version 2.24.9.17 reveal a new field on the contact sheet where users can jot down notes about their contacts.
These notes remain private and are only visible to the user who created them, ensuring confidentiality. This functionality is anticipated to be available on both the mobile app and WhatsApp Web.
While these features are currently undergoing beta testing, an official release date has not been announced. If user feedback during testing remains positive, these functionalities may soon be incorporated into a WhatsApp update.
Recent reports suggest that WhatsApp is working on a feature to improve user interaction. This feature, discovered during beta testing, aims to emphasize recent online contacts, making it easier for users to initiate conversations with people they’ve recently interacted with.
Discovered by WABetaInfo during beta testing, this upcoming feature aims to simplify communication by allowing users to easily connect with friends, family, and colleagues who are currently active or were recently online.
